How to use icons in Notion

  1. 1

    Choose a color

Notion's own icons are dark gray. Match them with #37352F, or pick a soft color for an aesthetic setup. The whole set previews in that color.

  2. 2

    Download PNG

Open an icon and download a 256px or 512px PNG. Notion recommends 280 by 280px for page icons, and a transparent PNG looks right in light and dark mode.

  3. 3

Set it as a page icon

Hover the page title, click Add icon, choose Upload and pick the PNG. The same works for database pages and callout blocks.

  4. 4

    Inline images

Type /image in a page to place a larger icon in the content, for example as a section header in a dashboard.

Tips

  • Pick a palette of two or three colors and use them by area: work in one color, personal in another.
  • For dark mode, download a light version (white or a pale tint) as well, or use a mid-tone that works on both.
  • Name files by page ("reading-list.png") so they are easy to find when you rebuild a template.

Questions

What size should a Notion page icon be?

Notion recommends 280 by 280 pixels. Download a 256px or 512px PNG with a transparent background.

Can I use these icons in a Notion template I sell?

You can use them in templates for yourself and clients. Selling a template whose main value is the icons, or redistributing the icon files, is not allowed.

Do the icons work in Notion dark mode?

A transparent PNG works in both modes, but dark icons can be hard to see on a dark background. Pick a mid-tone color, or download a light copy for dark mode.
