How to use icons in resume

  1. 1

    Pick one color

Choose the color of your headings (dark gray or your accent color) in the color picker above. Every icon on the page updates, so you can check they match.

  2. 2

    Download PNG at 128px

Open an icon and download a 128px PNG. It stays sharp when printed at contact-line size and keeps the file small.

  3. 3

    Insert into your document

In Word: Insert, Pictures, This Device. In Google Docs: Insert, Image, Upload from computer. Set wrapping to In line with text so the icon stays next to its label.

  4. 4

    Size it to the text

Make the icon about the height of a capital letter in your body text, roughly 12 to 16pt. Bigger icons pull attention away from your experience.

Tips

  • Keep the words. Applicant tracking systems read text, not pictures, so put an icon next to "Email" or your email address, never instead of it.
  • Use icons in three places at most: contact line, section headings, skills. More than that starts to look busy.
  • Same stroke, same size, same color everywhere. Mixing icon sets is the fastest way to make a resume look cheap.

Questions

Are icons on a resume a good idea?

In moderation, yes. Small icons next to contact details and section headings help a reader scan the page. Keep all text as real text so applicant tracking systems can read it.

What size should resume icons be?

Display them at about the height of your body text, 12 to 16pt. Download PNGs at 128px so they stay sharp in print.

Can I use these icons on a resume template I sell?

You can use them in resumes for yourself and for clients. Selling a template where the icons are the main value, or redistributing the icons as a pack, is not allowed.
