iOS app icon sizes 2026 and how to make an aesthetic home screen

· 7 min read · Guides

This guide covers two things people search for together: the app icon sizes iOS uses in 2026, and how to give your own iPhone a matching, aesthetic home screen with custom icons. The first half is for app makers, the second half is for everyone.

iOS app icon sizes in 2026

Since iOS 18 Xcode only needs one 1024 x 1024px image, and with iOS 26 Apple's Icon Composer builds the layered Liquid Glass icon from your artwork. The system still renders the icon at these sizes, which are worth checking so details survive:

Rules for the 1024px master

  • Supply a full square. Do not round the corners; iOS applies its own mask.
  • No transparency on the outer edge, and no text that will be unreadable at 40px.
  • Keep the main shape in the middle, with breathing room toward the edges.
  • Check it small. If you cannot tell what it is at 60px, simplify it.

Dark, clear and tinted icons

iOS 26 lets people switch their home screen to Dark, Clear or Tinted. You can provide each version yourself, or iOS generates them. Generated versions work best when the icon has a clear foreground shape on a simple background, which is also why line and solid style icons hold up so well in these modes.

How to make an aesthetic iPhone home screen

You cannot replace another app's real icon, but you can add a Shortcuts bookmark with any image you like and hide the original in the App Library. It takes about a minute per app.

1. Make a matching icon set

Open the app icon maker, pick a theme like pastel, beige or black, change any app you want, and download the pack. Every icon is a 1024px PNG, so it stays sharp on any iPhone. Save the images to Photos or Files.

2. Create a shortcut for each app

  1. Open the Shortcuts app and tap + to make a new shortcut.
  2. Tap Add Action, search for Open App and choose it.
  3. Tap App and pick the app this icon is for.
  4. Tap the share or info button and choose Add to Home Screen.
  5. Tap the small icon, choose Choose Photo or Choose File, and select your new icon.
  6. Type the name you want under the icon and tap Add.

3. Hide the original apps

Touch and hold the original app icon, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. The app stays installed in the App Library, and your new icon opens it.

Tips for a home screen that looks finished

  • Pick one color family and use it for the icons, the wallpaper and any widgets.
  • Use the same icon style everywhere. Mixing line and solid icons looks messy fast.
  • Fewer icons look calmer. Keep the first page to your daily apps and move the rest to the App Library.
  • No time for shortcuts? iOS 26 Tinted mode recolors every supported icon to one color in seconds: hold the home screen, tap Edit, then Customize.

Android works too

On Android, most custom launchers (and some phone makers' built-in settings) let you set any PNG as an app icon directly, without shortcuts. The same 1024px pack works there.

Browse all the ready-made app icon themes, or pick single icons from over 150 free icon sets and color them yourself.

Questions people ask

What size is an iOS app icon?

Design one 1024 x 1024px square. iOS creates the smaller sizes, such as 180 x 180px on the iPhone home screen, plus dark, clear and tinted versions.

Should iOS app icons have rounded corners?

No. Supply a full square image. iOS applies its own rounded mask.

How do I change app icons on iPhone?

Make an icon image, then in the Shortcuts app create an Open App shortcut, choose Add to Home Screen and pick your image as its icon. Hide the original app in the App Library.

What size should custom iPhone home screen icons be?

A square PNG of at least 180px works, but 512 or 1024px keeps it sharp. Icon Pantry app icon packs export at 1024px.

Can I change icon colors without Shortcuts?

Yes, in iOS 26 hold the home screen, tap Edit, then Customize, and choose Tinted to recolor supported icons to one color.
